The PMSA Board today announced the appointment of Dr Sandra Hastie as the 13th Principal of Somerville House, following the pending retirement of Principal Kim Kiepe at the end of the year.
Dr Hastie is currently the Principal of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, an Independent Presbyterian boarding and day girls’ school in New Zealand, which is known for its outstanding academic, cultural, and sporting achievements.
Dr Hastie has successfully led both primary and secondary schools and has more than 35 years of experience in the Independent School Sector.
PMSA Board Chair, Margaret Berry said, “Dr Hastie has a strong knowledge and commitment to girls’ education and throughout her career has been dedicated to creating a learning culture that encourages students to be curious, innovative, and entrepreneurial, so they are prepared to navigate the rapidly changing technological world.
“Dr Hastie has an exceptional reputation as an accomplished leader of high performing schools and is committed to the implementation of leading-edge initiatives to support the development of both staff and students.
“I am confident that Dr Hastie will carry on the Somerville House legacy and lead our historic School into a new era of educational excellence,” Mrs Berry said.
PMSA Chief Executive Officer, Shane Coppin said he was looking forward to working with Dr Hastie as Somerville House enters its 125th year in education.

Dr Hastie said she is eager to meet the staff, students and families of Somerville House.

Dr Hastie holds a Doctor of Education, a Master of Educational Administration (Hons), a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma of Teaching. She was also the Vice President and Executive Committee Member of ISNZ (Independent Schools of New Zealand) and has a number of professional associations.
The PMSA is excited to welcome Dr Hastie and her husband to Brisbane and to the Somerville House community when she commences in her new role in January 2024.
