Somerville House Year 8 students embrace the spirit of giving’

The Somerville House Year 8 cohort has embraced the spirit of giving this festive season, collectively raising over 500 donations of Christmas gifts for the Salvation Army Wishing Tree Appeal and sanitary items for Share The Dignity, a not-for-profit organisation helping homeless women in need.

Our 2017 Middle School Captains report:

The Year 8 cohort has been tested with two themes this year: Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, and also to defy the phrase “Like a Girl”. These themes have challenged us: to question stereotyping, to think of others- showing kindness and compassion, to show gratitude, to have a moral responsibility not only to yourself, but to others, but most of all, to create the changes we want to see happen within our community.

With this in mind, we were set the task to see Christmas in its true light- as a time of giving to others, particularly those in need. In lieu of participating in class secret Santa, the Year 8 students and staff have been kindly donating a wide range of gifts and sanitary items for those who are less fortunate than us.

It has been great privilege and honour to be able to assist both these charities. We hope to continue our support of both of these charities in the future. Finally, none of this would have been able to be achieved without the help and organisation of our wonderful Head of Year Mrs Krzensk and the generosity of our enthusiastic Year 8 cohort and staff.
